When is Commencement?
Fall Commencement Ceremonies are held on the Saturday following UIC’s fall semester finals week.

When do I Participate in commencement?
Once you have verified with your college that all degree requirements are met, or will have been met, by the end of the semester you can participate in commencement. If you complete your degree requirements during the spring semester you must participate in the spring commencement ceremony. If you complete your degree requirements during the summer or fall semesters, you must participate in the fall commencement ceremony. All students are expected to attend the commencement ceremony for the semester in which they have completed all degree requirements.

How do I know if I am eligible to graduate?
Undergraduate students should check with the academic advisor assigned by the college. Graduate students must check with his or her home department. For any additional information regarding degree requirements please visit: Degree Requirements

How long will the commencement ceremony last?
Approximately two hours.

How do I purchase my regalia?
Caps and gowns are available for purchase from the UIC Bookstore. You can purchase in store or online.

How many tickets do I receive for my commencement ceremony?
Tickets are required for all ceremonies. The number of tickets is determined based on the size of the graduating class and the capacity of the venue. Information on ticket counts is sent at the time of the commencement invitation. You can request tickets on the registration form.

What time should I arrive for my commencement?
It is recommended that students arrive one hour before the commencement ceremony is set to begin. This way they can check in and find the appropriate seat before the beginning of the ceremony. Doors at the Credit Union 1 Arena open for guests approximately one hour before the ceremony and remain open until the end of the ceremony.

Will my name be called during the commencement ceremony?
Yes, all students attending the ceremony will be individually recognized after the conferral of the degrees. Names are prerecorded by professional name readers and will play as you scan your Grad Pass or name card as you enter the stage.

I have been awarded university honors, how will I be recognized during my commencement ceremony?
Latin honors listed below will appear on UIC transcripts for undergraduate students participating commencement ceremonies honoring student who earned their degrees at UIC. Summa cum laude will be distinguished with gold cords. Magna cum laude will be distinguished with silver cords, and cum laude will be distinguished with bronze cords.
Summa cum laude: 3.90 and above GPA “Highest praise”
Magna cum laude: 3.75 to 3.89 GPA “High praise”
Cum laude: 3.50 to 3.74 GPA “Praise”For more information on the Latin Honors policy please refer to the Registrar website

I have been awarded college honors, will I be recognized during commencement?
Each college or department may choose different ways to honor its outstanding graduates. If you have received a college or department honor or distinction, please direct all questions to your advisor, department, or college.

Where can I purchase graduation announcements?
Graduation announcements can be purchased through the Jostens website.

I am a faculty member, who do I contact to order a cap and gown?
Faculty regalia orders are now being accepted. Please click HERE to request your regalia. The deadline to order is March 25, 2024.

When will I receive my diploma?
Diplomas will be mailed to graduates beginning 1 to 2 weeks after your degree has been awarded. All degrees will be posted onto student records 3 to 4 weeks after grades have been processed. Name and/or address changes must be made by the last day of the term. Please refer to the Registrar website for more information.
